Creature of the Day

rompo

rompo

"The Rompo is a mythological beast said to have been found in India and Africa. It is described as having the head and mouth of a hare, the ears of a human, a mane, a slender body approximately three feet in length, a long tail ending in a hairy brush, the front feet of a badger, and the rear feet of a bear. It feeds on human corpses, which it obtains by digging up graves, and is termed the "Man-Eater" due to this habit. After discovering a body, instead of immediately devouring it, it circles around it several times as if afraid to seize it. The legend of the Rompo may have been inspired by the ecology and behavior of hyenas."

Dream of the Day

Mood: nostalgic | Archetype: Caregiver
Elements: perfect black bruise

Dream Illustration

I was back in my grandmotherโ€™s old sunroom, the one with the worn floral cushions and the scent of dried lavender. Everything felt warm, golden-hour gentle, like a memory I hadn't thought of in years. In the center of the small, scuffed wooden table sat thisโ€ฆ sphere. Not obsidian, not velvet, but a black so profound, so utterly without reflection or flaw, it seemed to absorb light itself. It wasn't menacing; it was profoundly serene, radiating a quiet, absolute perfection. My whole being was consumed by a quiet, protective urge towards it, as if it was the most fragile, precious thing I had ever encountered, and its flawless existence depended entirely on my gentle guardianship.

I remember reaching out, my fingers trembling slightly with the weight of that responsibility. I didn't want to touch it, not really, but there was this overwhelming need to assure myself it was real, to feel its impossible smoothness, to tend to its silent presence. My touch was meant to be the softest caress, a whisper of care. But then, a flicker, a momentary lapse, a shift in balance โ€“ perhaps I tried too hard to be gentle, tensed up too much. My thumb, instead of gliding, pressed just a fraction too hard, too awkwardly, and a faint, purplish-blue mark bloomed across its perfect surface. A bruise. On something that was pure, absolute black.

The ache that blossomed in my chest was far deeper than any physical pain. It was a searing regret, a deep disappointment in myself for failing its pristine state. How could I have been so clumsy, so *un-careful*? The black, once perfect, now bore my mark, a testament to my inability to protect it from even myself. I wanted to soothe it, to make it whole again, but it was just a sphere, and the bruise, a spectral discoloration on pure void, seemed permanent. That feeling of having tarnished something utterly perfect, of having failed to uphold its delicate beauty, lingered, a hollow echo in the nostalgic warmth of the room.
