Mood: weird | Archetype: Everyman
Elements: condemned branch note
I was standing in what felt like everyoneโs backyard, a perfectly manicured, utterly unremarkable patch of lawn bordered by a beige fence. The air itself had a muted, 'every-afternoon' quality to it, like a photograph of a thousand different days blended into one. My own hands felt generic, just two hands, nothing special, nothing distinct. But then my eyes snagged on *it*.
There was a large oak, sturdy and commonplace, like every other oak youโve ever seen. But one branch, thicker than the rest, jutted out at a slightly awkward angle, just a little too bold, too defiant. It wasn't diseased, not visibly. Yet, tied around its base was a bright, stark orange ribbon, the kind that whispers of municipal ordinances and official pronouncements. It was condemned, I knew, not for rot, but for some subtle, unforgivable deviation from the norm. And a chill settled over me, not because of the branch itself, but because I felt it in my bones โ this quiet, unspoken judgment was somehow *for* me, too.
It was a weird, suffocating feeling. Like I was supposed to see myself in that branch, that part of me that maybe isn't quite as perfectly aligned, as flawlessly 'average' as the world demands. There was no one else around, yet I felt observed, part of a silent consensus that this branch, this *difference*, had to go. A vague, communal sense of relief seemed to emanate from the perfectly trimmed hedges, knowing that soon, everything would be uniformly, reassuringly... regular. And I just stood there, a perfectly regular person, feeling an irrational grief for a branch that dared to be a little too much.
